Background: The relationship between psoriasis and hepatitis C was previously controversial, so our purpose is to investigate this connection.Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the case-control, cross-sectional and cohort studies examining the association between psoriasis and hepatitis C in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane library databases and investigated the overlapping genes between psoriasis targets and hepatitis C targets using bioinformatics analysis. Based on overlapping genes and hub nodes, we also constructed the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and module respectively, followed by the pathway enrichment analysis. Results: We included 11 publications that reported a total of 11 studies (8 cross-sectional and 3 case-control). The case–control and cross-sectional studies included 25,047 psoriasis patients and 4,091,631 controls in total. Psoriasis was associated with a significant increase of prevalent hepatitis C (OR 1.72; 95% confidence interval [CI] (1.17-2.52)). A total of 389 significant genes were common to both hepatitis C and psoriasis, which mainly involved IL6, TNF, IL10, ALB, STAT3 and CXCL8. The module and pathway enrichment analyses showed that the common genes had the potential to influence varieties of biological pathways, including the inflammatory response, cytokine activity, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, which play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C and psoriasis.Conclusion: Patients with psoriasis display increased prevalence of hepatitis C and the basic related mechanisms between hepatitis C and psoriasis had been preliminarily clarified.

Background: To evaluate the protective effects of magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate on a mouse model of concanavalin A (ConA)-induced immunological liver injury. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight mice were randomly divided into a normal control group, a model group, three dose groups of magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (12.5, 25, 50 mg/kg) and a dexamethasone group (2.5 mg/kg). Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate was intraperitoneally injected for 5 consecutive days, and the model of immunological liver injury was established on the fifth day after caudal vein injection of ConA (20 mg/kg). Blood was collected to detect the activities of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) as well as the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). The levels of neopterin (NP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in liver tissues were measured, and histopathological changes were observed. Results: The serum levels of ALT and AST in the model group increased. Hepatic lobules had necrotic foci and inflammatory cell infiltration. The plasma levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ increased. In liver tissues, the levels of NP, MDA and MPO rose, but that of SOD decreased. Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate significantly attenuated the activities of ALT and AST (P<0.05). Histopathological staining showed that inflammation of the liver was relieved significantly. Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate also decreased the levels of NP, MDA and MPO in liver tissues (P<0.05), raised that of SOD and reduced the plasma levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ (P<0.05). Conclusion: Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate protected against ConA-induced immunological liver injury in mice, probably through immune regulation and antioxidation.

Positive effects of hydrogen-water bathing in patients of psoriasis and parapsoriasis en plaques

Psoriasis and parapsoriasis en plaques are chronic inflammatory skin diseases, both representing therapeutic challenge in daily practice and adversely affecting the quality of life. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been evidenced to be involved in the pathogenesis of the chronic inflammatory diseases. We now report that hydrogen water, an effective ROS scavenger, has significant and rapid improvement in disease severity and quality of life for patients with psoriasis and parapsoriasis en plaques. At week 8, our parallel-controlled trial revealed 24.4% of patients (10/41) receiving hydrogen-water bathing achieved at least 75% improvement in Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) score compared with 2.9% of patients (1/34) of the control group (Pc = 0.022, OR = 0.094, 95%CI = [0.011, 0.777]). Of patients, 56.1% (23/41) who received bathing achieved at least 50% improvement in PASI score compared with only 17.7%(6/34) of the control group (P = 0.001, OR = 0.168, 95%CI = [0.057, 0.492]). The significant improvement of pruritus was also observed (P = 3.94 × 10−4). Besides, complete response was observed in 33.3% of patients (2/6) of parapsoriasis en plaques and partial response in 66.7% (4/6) at week 8. Our findings suggested that hydrogen-water bathing therapy could fulfill the unmet need for these chronic inflammatory skin diseases.
