Abstract: The human cervical microbiome is complex, and its role in health and disease has just begun to be elucidated. In this study, 57 cervical swab samples from 19 HIV/HPV co-infected women were analyzed for both virome and bacteriome composition. Virome analysis focused on circular DNA viruses through rolling circle amplification followed by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Data were assigned to virus families and genera, and HPV types were identified. NGS data of bacterial 16S from a subset of 24 samples were ass… Show more

“…Out of these, TTV has been implicated in 100% cases of seasonal hyperacute panuveitis (SHAPU) and culture-negative endophthalmitis ( 15 ). In case of cervix, Papillomaviridae, Anelloviridae, Genomoviridae , and Herpesviridae dominated different community state types ( 102 ). Asymptomatic viremia dominated by phages has been noted in different studies ( 11 , 12 ).…”

“…Another association of the virome with the immune status can be drawn through Anelloviruses, which have been linked to functional immune competence [69][70][71][72][73] . We report that Anelloviruses are a stable component of the upper airway virome, as in other systems 69,[74][75][76] 75 .…”

“…BV is associated with a higher risk of miscarriage, preterm premature rupture of membranes and a higher susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections, as HPV infection [20][21][22]. Some studies to date have reported that vaginal microbiome (VM) plays an important role in the persistence of the HPV infection and the subsequent development of cervical precancerous or cancerous lesions [2,4,8,[17][18][19][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Increasing VM diversity is associated with advancing CINs severity and viral persistence [26].…”
