Abstract: Complications of surgical mesh procedures have led to legal cases against manufacturers worldwide and to national inquiries about their safety. The aim of this study was to investigate the rate of adverse events of these procedures for stress urinary incontinence in England over 8 years. This was a retrospective cohort study of first-time tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), trans-obturator tape (TOT) or suprapubic sling (SS) surgical mesh procedures between April 2007 and March 2015. Cases were identified from th… Show more

“…21,22 The use of suburethral slings is common and the procedure is considered to be safe, with a low rate of adverse events. 23 however, this method has been questioned owing to its complexity, numerous categories, and lack of clarity. 29 In conclusion, the present study found comparable rates of perioperative and postoperative adverse events among the two treatment groups when using the Clavien-Dindo classification.…”

“…Despite this body of evidence supporting the continued use of MUS, specific concerns were raised regarding the short follow‐up times in many of the included studies and the lack of “real life” data including information regarding pain and sexual dysfunction. A large retrospective cohort study (92 246 MUS) using the national hospital admission database in England reported a 5‐year complication rate of 9.8% . However, the precise nature of these complications was poorly detailed with the majority coded as “complications of procedures not elsewhere classified”.…”

“…Vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery has been associated with shorter surgical time, shorter hospital stay, and faster patient recovery with good long‐term anatomical results, 4 which helped its popularization. Data from manufacturers indicate that in 2010, 300 000 women underwent surgical procedures to repair POP 10,11 …”

“…Data from manufacturers indicate that in 2010, 300 000 women underwent surgical procedures to repair POP. 10,11 In pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, mesh referrers to synthetic material, and the most common is polypropylene. Due to the multiple adverse events that appeared with the multifilament and small pore size synthetic mesh in surgery, those meshes intended to be used in POP surgery should meet the characteristics described for the type I of Amid's classification (monofilament with large pore size).…”
