Compliance with Parents’ Rules: Between-Person and Within-Person Predictions

Abstract: The current study focused on the childhood to adolescence transition and sought to determine why some children are more compliant than others as well as why children comply more often with some of their parents' rules than with others. Indices of parents' agency and children's agency were tested as predictors of compliance. Parent-based decision-making and parents' responses to expressed disagreement served as indices of parents' agency while children's beliefs regarding the legitimacy of parents' rules and fe… Show more

“…Further, it is unclear exactly which parental rules adolescents defy. Future research therefore could pay attention to the content of parental rules, for instance by contrasting defiance about personal versus moral issues (Smetana et al, 2004) or by focusing on within-person variability in defiance (Kuhn, Phan, & Laird, 2014). A third limitation involves the relative homogeneity of our sample in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and cultural background.…”

“…However, a broader range of topics may permit stronger tests of within‐person effects. Nonetheless, Kuhn et al () found that parents’ responses to expressed disagreement (i.e., stand strong, compromise) were robust predictors of within person variance in compliance with parents rules covering the same range of topics at the same age, suggesting that topic coverage is not the sole explanation for weak within‐person prediction. Other child cognitions or parental behaviors not examined in this study may be more relevant in explaining children's use of information management strategies in one situation as compared to another.…”
