Complexity and Risk in Health Information Infrastructures: An Options Analysis

Abstract: Managing the development and implementation of large health information infrastructures has proved to be quite difficult in many countries. The root of the problem is managing complexity in unstable environments. In this study we investigate a large case in Norway, an ePrescription project, using a real option analysis. We offer three conclusions.First, the real option analysis is a valuable tool for analyzing not only risk in IT projects, but also for understanding the complexity issues of large health infras… Show more

“…68 Public health measures such as social distancing, as well as shorter hospital stays to minimize infection, may have negative consequences for the management of chronic conditions including mental health issues however they have also accelerated some developments in virtual care. 67 Health IT developments such as telemonitoring, telehealth and web-based portals could facilitate communication between healthcare providers, 69 patients and caregivers. 15 Findings from this review can be integrated into clinical practice: multidisciplinary care plans with input from hospital allied health made in conjunction with patients (and their caregivers) need to be routinely included in electronic discharge summaries.…”

“…Consequently, their officers had to be physically present at the passport office to check original documents. Since silo systems should be the starting point for digital platformization [13], it is important that the passport office platformize the collaborating institutions to avoid face-to-face contacts.…”

“…In recent years, pre-digital or traditional organizations without virtual platforms have begun to adopt them for digital services. The process by which pre-digital organizations migrate their activities from physical or offline onto online platforms is termed virtual platformization [11][12][13]. Generally, virtual platformization seeks to replace face-to-face, physical contacts with digital interactions [14].…”

“…And Islind et al [35] (2016) more specifically referred to platformization as the socio-technical process of creating a platform. Bygstad & Hanseth [36] (2018), from the perspective of technology definition, believes that platformization is a process in which specific information technology solutions (IT silo solutions) gradually turn to platformoriented digital infrastructure.…”

“…This is the platformization led by the information structure reform. Bygstad & Hanseth [36] (2018) used digital infrastructures and IT silo solutions to explain and study the process of platformization. Rodon [38] (2018) explained the mechanism of platformization from the perspective of level consolidation (generative entrenchment), and believed that platformization is a process in which external construction levels gradually increase to expand the functions and scope of the existing system and consolidate the original system at the same time.…”
