The present article reviews the clinical use of thiol-based metal chelators in intoxications and overexposure with mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb). Currently, very few commercially available pharmaceuticals can successfully reduce or prevent the toxicity of these metals. The metal chelator meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is considerably less toxic than the classical agent British anti-Lewisite (BAL, 2,3-dimercaptopropanol) and is the recommended agent in poisonings with Pb and organic Hg. Its toxicity is also lower than that of DMPS (dimercaptopropane sulfonate), although DMPS is the recommended agent in acute poisonings with Hg salts. It is suggested that intracellular Cd deposits and cerebral deposits of inorganic Hg, to some extent, can be mobilized by a combination of antidotes, but clinical experience with such combinations are lacking. Alpha-lipoic acid (α-LA) has been suggested for toxic metal detoxification but is not considered a drug of choice in clinical practice. The molecular mechanisms and chemical equilibria of complex formation of the chelators with the metal ions Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ are reviewed since insight into these reactions can provide a basis for further development of therapeutics.

Purpose of the study: This study investigated the socio-economic effect on household consumption of rural farmers in South Sumatera, Indonesia. Methodology:The data used were primary data obtained from an in-depth survey of 300 farmer households. The analysis method used a quantitative approach with a polynomial regression model. Main Findings:The finding showed that from the four independent variables estimated, there are three which have a significant effect on farmer household consumption: household income, number of family members, and education level of the household head. Despite changes in consumption patterns between food and non-food, the process of food diversification is an important task for the government, especially to reduce dependence on rice consumption. Applications of this study:This study was conducted in South Sumatra, Indonesia in the field of agricultural economics. This study can support development planning policies in the food sector in South Sumatra. Novelty/Originality of this study:This study focus as efforts on the policy of diversifying food consumption needs to be synergized with the development of local resource-based food products.

The complexation between Ni 2+ and tartarate, in TRIS buffer, which forms successive complexes, was studied by differential pulse polarography (DPP) and multivariate cure resolution (MCR). This system shows both electrochemically inert and labile attribute. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to analyze such systems by conventional and classical methods. Experimental data were obtained by DPP for different metal-to-ligand ratio at pH ¼ 7.5. This procedure was done by adding appropriate volume of tartarate solution to a metal ion solution with constant concentration of Ni 2+ . The complex formation constants obtained by resolving the data matrix by soft modeling approach and those obtained by conventional method were compared, and there was no significant difference between them. Although the condition of linearity of the current data with respect to the concentrations is not totally fulfilled, but the results show the variation from linearity for the studied system is small and can be neglected. Thus, the MCR provided good estimations for the stability constants of complexation process, and is suitable for use as a complementary tool on the study of systems with both successive inert and labile complexes.
