Complementary Color Tuning by HCl via Phosphorescence-to-Fluorescence Conversion on Insulated Metallopolymer Film and Its Light-Induced Acceleration

Abstract: An insulated metallopolymer that undergoes phosphorescence-to-fluorescence conversion between complementary colors by an acid-stimulus is proposed as a color-tunable material. A Pt-based phosphorescent metallopolymer, where the conjugated polymeric backbone is insulated by a cyclodextrin, is depolymerized by HCl via acidic cleavage of Pt-acetylide bonds to form a fluorescent monomer. The insulation enables phosphorescence-to-fluorescence conversion to take place in the solid film. Rapid color change was achiev… Show more

“…Moreover, these polymers not only detect the fluoride anion with high sensitivity and selectivity with a detection limit as low as 10– 8 M, but also work as fluoride anion extractors ( Zhang et al, 2018b ). Very recently, some novel designed insulated conjugated bimetallopolymer for the sensor application were also developed ( Kaneko et al, 2020 ; Masai et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The platinum‐acetylide complex possessed potential reactivity to HCl under strong acidic condition with long reaction time to facilitate terminal alkyne via protonation of platinum‐acetylide complex. [ 34 ] However, it was relatively stable under a temporal treatment of the weak acidic condition in this study. Moreover, the HCl durability of Pt‐EB was 9.6 times enhanced by the macrocyclic protection of the platinum‐acetylide complex (see the details in Section S3 of Supporting Information).…”

“…We previously reported various metallo‐conjugated polymers enclosed by cyclodextrin derivatives to enhance their optical functions. [ 31–34 ] Here, we uncovered the novel reactivity of a platinum‐acetylide complex covered by macrocycles, and applied reactivity to a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) network as a novel cross‐linker to realize the two incompatible functions of photodegradability and photostability. The material was photostable, but it was photodegradable only in the presence of a chemical additive, HCl.…”
