Compilation, Evaluation, and Selection of Physical-Chemical Property Data for α-, β-, and γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane

Abstract: A complete set of temperature-dependent physical-chemical property data (aqueous solubility (S W), octanol−water partition coefficient (K OW), vapor pressure (P), Henry's law constant (H), octanol−air partition coefficient (K OA), and octanol solubility (S O)) for α-, β-, and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) is derived by evaluating, averaging, and regressing all experimentally obtained values reported in the literature. Properties for each isomer are adjusted slightly to ensure thermodynamic consistency. That ad… Show more

“…All food web components were polluted. Predominance of chlordecone compared to β-HCH in contamination profiles resulted from (i) the anterior use of technical HCH (this pesticide had been forbidden twenty years before chlordecone), (ii) the lower quantities spread on plantations (β-HCH only represented 5-12% of the total isomers contained in technical HCH mixture (Xiao et al, 2004)) and (iii) the less persistent characteristics of β-HCH compared to chlordecone: the partitioning coefficient (K OC ) between the adsorbed part onto organic matter and the dissolved part in water is about ten times lower for β-HCH, and confers to this molecule higher mobility in soils and solubility in water.…”

“…23b). While this could have something to do with different patterns of historical usage of technical HCH and lindane affecting these two stations (for which only technical HCH contains significant amounts of α-HCH), it is also seen as a reflection of differences in physical-chemical properties between different HCH isomers (Xiao et al, 2004). This is in turn expected to affect the LRT potential within the group of HCHs (Beyer et al, 2003;Li et al, 2002), with γ -HCH being more easily subject to wet deposition compared to α-HCH.…”
