Comparison of the performance of different reversed‐phase columns for liquid chromatography separation of 11 pollutant phenols

Abstract: A systematic optimization of the HPLC separation of a mixture containing 11 pollutant phenols (PPs) using a Hypersil ODS (250 mm64.6 mm, 5 lm) column and UV-DAD detection has been carried out. The binary mobile phases used were obtained by mixing 50 mM phosphate (pH = 3.0) and methanol, ACN, or THF as organic modifiers. After selecting ACN as an organic modifier, the effects of pH and temperature on PPs separation were studied. A mobile phase of 50 mM acetate (pH = 5.0) -ACN (60 : 40 v/v) at 508C allowed the s… Show more

“…Phenolic compounds have been determined using different strategies, mainly exploiting separation techniques, e.g., gas chromatography and liquid chromatography [12,13]. Liquid chromatography is one of the most used techniques since derivatization of analytes is avoided [13,14].…”

“…Liquid chromatography is one of the most used techniques since derivatization of analytes is avoided [13,14]. Moreover, the advent of monolithic columns made possible the development of low-pressure chromatographic techniques such as sequential injection chromatography [15] and multisyringe chromatography (MSC) [16] as a result of the implementation of monolithic columns in sequential injection analysis (SIA) and multisyringe flow injection analysis (MSFIA) [17] systems, respectively.…”

“…LC run time was chosen in our study. Alternatively, C8 reversed-phase column may perform similarly as C18 reversed-phase column in a shorter run time, although a significant effort needs to optimize chromatographic condition [24,25]. Various kinds of metabolites in biological samples often contain carboxylic acids.…”

“…NT and NP are of intense environmental and forensic interest 42–44. Both isomer series (which include ortho , meta , and para members) are well characterized 43, 45–49, with NT previously being used to examine class I and II modifiers in VEKC 9.…”
