“…Thus, in this rat caries model, the primary effect of both A1C13 and SnF2 was in reducing the formation of caries le sions, but A1C13 also showed evidence of limiting lesion size. Proposed mechanisms of action for Al's inhibition of caries have been discussed previously [Kleber and Putt, 1984], SnF2 was used as a positive control because its cariostatic activity has been demonstrated many times using this rat fissure caries model [Muhler, 1957;Muhler et al, 1954;Muhler and Day, 1950], and the reduction in caries incidence observed here was similar to that reported pre viously with topically applied SnF2 using this model [Muhler, 1959]. The fact that 2 independent examiners obtained nearly identical findings attests to the reliability of the fissure caries scoring procedure.…”

“…Sixty weanlings (28 days old) were distributed into three groups of 20 according to sex, weight, and litter. During the 11-wcek test period, they were provided a car ies-inducing diet [Muhler, 1957] and distilled water ad li bitum. The rats, which were weighed initially and at the conclusion of the study, were housed in pairs by sex in mesh-bottomed, stainless steel cages.…”
