a b s t r a c tA high throughout semi-quantification method for screening nearly 900 organic contaminants (OCs) in river sediments has been developed. For most OCs tested, concentrations calculated from the proposed semi-quantification method deviated from actual values by a factor of 4. The overall recovery tests indicated that most OCs can be successfully extracted from sediments with recovery rates from 84.1 to 128.6%. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method towards OC quantification, we screened OCs from sediments collected from the Haihe River basin. Seventy unregulated OCs (including pesticides, flame retardants, PPCPs, etc.) were identified and quantified at concentrations up to 2600 ng/g from 24 sediment samples. From these results, it is confirmed that the developed method is a useful way to fulfill a comprehensive analysis of OCs in sediments and would be valuable for the identification and prioritization of priority pollutants in watershed management.

In the present work, the use of surfactants and oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions as alternative extractants in accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pyrene and phenanthrene) from soils was investigated. In particular, the effect of each individual component within the microemulsions, i.e., oil phase, surfactant and co-surfactatnt, and extraction conditions on the percentage recovery was systematically studied. When compared to the water and organic solvent, the important findings were that the common surfactant solutions at the concentrations above their critical micelle concentrations (CMC) were shown to enhance the percentage recovery at the lower extraction temperature. Moreover, the highest percentage recovery can be obtained using microemulsion as the extractant. The chemical component within the microemulsions and relative amounts of the oil phase appeared to play a much more significant role in ensuring high percentage recovery. Finally, an overall comparison between the percentage recoveries obtained with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ASE using organic solvents, surfactants and microemulsions as extractants was exhibited.

The aim of this work was to develop an efficient methodology for the reliable fractioning of nitratedpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Unlike what usually occurs under pressures developed by HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) systems (above 11 bar) we observed that when normal phase chromatographic fractioning procedures are accomplished under very low pressures (about 1 bar), dipole molecules (nitro-PAHs) elute much faster than non-polar organic molecules (PAHs). This finding allowed developing an original and very efficient methodology for fractioning nitro-PAHs and PAHs. This method is based on normal-phase liquid chromatography through a home-made phenyl column by using hexane as mobile phase at very low speed flow (0.05 ml min À1). Unlike typical HPLC methodology, the fractioning of nitro-PAHs and PAHs was accomplished as a function of their polarity (first the polar compounds as a unique peak and further, the non-polar compounds, PAHs) rather than as a function of their medium polarizability.
