Comparison of haemoglobin assessments by HemoCue and two automated haematology analysers in young Laotian children

Abstract: BackgroundHaemoglobin (Hb) assessment by Hemocue is used widely for anaemia screening in both adults and children. However, few studies have compared the diagnostic accuracy of Hemocue with an automated haematology analyser in young children.AimTo compare Hb concentrations by Hemocue Hb301 and two automated haematology analysers in young children in rural communities of Lao PDR.MethodsCapillary blood was collected from 6-month-old to 23-month-old children (n=1487) for determination of Hb concentration by Hemoc… Show more

“…3B) and from arterial, venous, and capillary blood among adult males and females aged 18 years and older. 18,84,95,113,[116][117][118][119]146 All comparisons reported higher Hb concentrations compared with the AHA (0.5−6.1 g/L), but were within the ±7% threshold for mean difference in Hb concentrations. 18,84,95,113,[116][117][118][119]146…”

“…reported that Hemocue 301 system was less sensitive and detected lesser concentrations when compared with analyzer. 6 There was a significantly strong correlation between HemoCue Hb301 and automated analyzer (rvalue = 0.732, p <0.0001). However, the difference was small but clinically significant.…”

“…Yet, these findings are based on capillary blood analysis. In a recent study among children from Laos, Hb concentration by HemoCue was significantly higher in venous blood samples compared to capillary blood, resulting in different anemia prevalence data [52]. Although Hb measurement via HemoCue is thought to be more reliable in venous samples [53], some report that HemoCue showed poor agreement compared with automated hematology analyzers [52].…”
