Comparison of a Smartphone-Based Photographic Method with Face-to-Face Caries Assessment: A Mobile Teledentistry Model

Abstract: Despite some limitations, the mobile teledentistry approach has shown the potential to detect occlusal caries from photographs taken by a smartphone camera with an acceptable diagnostic performance compared to traditional face-to-face screening. This study suggests that telemedicine and cellular phone technology can be combined to create an inexpensive and reliable screening tool.

“…With the greater acess to smarthphones, new strategies of treatment are releasing. There is reports of this use to motivation training of brushing teeth by app [14], to instructions of the use of orthodontics appliances by games [15], to assessment of occlusal caries by photos [16] or even to teach the emergency management of avulsed teeth [17].…”

“…From a review of the available literature, the focus of teledentistry investigation in children can be seen in children in early caries diagnosis. The authors agree that a satisfactory distant diagnosis of caries can be obtained and treatment procedures can be decided uponthis way as well6, 8,10,12,15,16,18,19. It is something to be expected, naturally, since the absence of caries constitutes a basis of oral health in children27.…”

“…It would be practically impossible to undertake a comparison of all the smartphones with built-in cameras available in the market, or of the most up-to-date ones, considering that companies launch new models with new functions and parts at a pace that is difficult to keep up with. An Android App has been created to facilitate the acquisition ans transmission of dental images to a store-and-forward based telemedicine server [ 31 ]. A recent systematic review on the use of teledentistry for caries detection conclude that although valuable, further studies, based on carefully designed research are still needed to investigate its effectiveness [ 32 ].…”
