Comparison between open and laparoscopic elective cholecystectomy in elderly, in a teaching hospital

Abstract: there was no difference in morbidity and mortality when comparing OC with LC. The laparoscopic approach led to shorter hospital stay. Operative time did not differ between the two access routes. The conversion rate was similar to other studies.

“…The complications (17.9%) found in elderly patients are lower than those reported in other studies [4, 23]. However, the rate of these complications is higher than that reported by Rubert et al [24]. There was no significant difference in terms of resumption of normal diet and length of stay in the hospital postoperatively for elderly and young patients ( P > 0.05).…”

“…In the present study both the comparative groups had equal proportion of study subjects which coincides with finding by Soper et al 8 Vander Velpen et al 9 but unequal in the studies by Williams et al 10 and Rubert et al 11 Mean age of patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery was 38.84 ± 9.27 years and that of the other group was 38.04 ± 10.23 years. It was 62 years in the former group and 61.5 years in the latter in the study by Vander Velpenet al 9 Females had higher prevalence (82%) than males (18%) which was also seen in the study by Barase AK.…”

“…12 The hospital stay in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy was less (3.72 days) as compared to in open cholecystectomy (6.98 days). The above finding was supported by Tronsden et al 13 Rubert et al 11 and Keus F et al 14 Grace et al. 18 Hardy et al 16 Chan et al 19 Buanes et al 20 Porte and DeVries.…”

“…It is estimated, nowadays, that 85% of the patients with cholecystolithiasis keep asymptomatic for at least 10 years. In the last two decades, the knowledge and management evolved in a meaningful way, and a lot of clinical and microbiological parameters have been studied, just like the way how antibiotics and defense systems of biliary tract interfere with the evolution of the infections in bile duct 1 , 4 , 10 , 11 .…”
