Comparison between mechanical properties of aged and unaged silicone rubbers filled with titanium dioxide, quartz, aluminium silicate and vulkasil (s type)

Abstract: Silicone rubbers have advantageous thermal and electrical properties compared with other elastomers. Their mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and tear resistance are relatively weak compared with other elastomers. In this work, inorganic fillers such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) 2 and 5 phr, quartz, aluminium silicate and vulkasil (s type) 5, 15 and 25 phr were used in silicone rubber compound samples. Improvement in mechanical and processing properties are observed for these samples. The samples … Show more

“…Because of the silica (SiO 2 ) in CAB‐O‐SIL, a good interaction and compatibility occurs between SH and SS groups from polysulfide with Si, which will reduce the mobility of polymer chains and increase viscosity. For higher values of SiO 2 in the CAB‐O‐SIL, interactions are stronger 20. This behavior is dependent on the percentages of water content in these inorganic particles.…”

“…When the content of BT was increased to 10 parts, the aggregation of nanosilica was not observed on the surface with an increase of aging time, suggesting that the incorporation of BT can effectively inhibit the migration of silica. The presence of BT could capture the oxidation free radicals in hot air, which greatly reduces the fracture of the main chain and effectively improves the quality of the SR composites 32, 33 …”

“…Fei et al prepared heat‐resistant SR which was thermally stabilized by α‐Fe 2 O 3. 26 In other investigations, alumina fiber 27 and TiO 2 28,29 have also been found to effectively reinforce the thermal stability of LSR. However, the reduced mechanical strength of LSR brought by thermal stable fillers also limits the application of these fillers 29 .…”

However, the reduced mechanical strength of LSR brought by thermal stable fillers also limits the application of these fillers 29 . Therefore, it is highly desirable to achieve the reinforcement of LSR mechanical properties while enhancing its thermal stability at elevated temperatures.…”
