Comparing the Patient Health Questionnaire – 15 and the Somatic Symptom Scale – 8 as measures of somatic symptom burden

Abstract: The PHQ-15m and the SSS-8 are comparable measures in terms of reliability and validity and severity classifications. These findings are in line with previous results and support the use of the SSS-8 as a valuable and short alternative to the original PHQ-15 in settings with limited assessment time.

“…The SSS‐8 factor structure reveals symptom clusters for gastrointestinal, pain, fatigue, and cardiopulmonary somatic expression and has shown good reliability and construct validity (Gierk et al, ). It is highly correlated with a modified version of the PHQ‐15 and demonstrates at least comparable psychometric properties (Toussaint, Kroenke, Baye, & Lourens, ). Moreover, its sensitivity to change was recently established in relation to depression, anxiety, and disability (Gierk, Kohlmann, Hagemann‐Goebel, Löwe, & Nestoriuc, ).…”

“…For a start, it evaluates different dimensions of the disorder with fewer items. Many comparative studies suggest the use of the SSS-8 as a more efficient alternative to the original PHQ-15, especially in clinical settings or in research settings with limited assessment time to reduce the measurement burden for study participants (Toussaint, Kroenke, Baye, & Lourens, 2017). For this reason, the need for a precise and appropriate instrument for measuring the burden of physical cues is of paramount importance.…”

“…Clinically, these symptoms are called somatization symptoms [27,28]. Somatization is de ned as a chronic mental disorder characterized by the presence of one or more frequently changing somatic symptoms, involving multiple systems and organs of the body [29]. Those symptoms often induce patients' incorrect understanding or excessive attention, imposing a huge economic burden to the society [30].…”
