Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Early Pregnancy-Specific Genes Expressed in Peripheral Blood of Pregnant Sows

Abstract: Early and accurate diagnosis of pregnancy is important for effective management of an economical pig farm. Besides the currently available methods used in early diagnosis of sows, circulating nucleic acids in peripheral blood may contain some early pregnancy-specific molecular markers. For the first time, microarray analysis of peripheral blood from pregnant sows versus non-pregnant sows identified 127 up-regulated and 56 down-regulated genes at day 14 post-insemination. Gene Ontology annotation grouped the to… Show more

“…Out of 11 genes, four had the same expression pattern in both Brahman and Brangus: GPX6, IYD, EXPI, and SAA3. In pigs, GPX6 was proposed as a peripheral blood marker for early pregnancy detection (Shen et al, 2014). The early pregnancy scenario may be similar to postpubertal conditions in the luteal phase experienced by the Brahman and Brangus heifers.…”

“…Reproductive biology studies are also well represented (e.g. [101][102][103]), which was in comparison a very minor theme in human studies. As can be expected these themes are common to most species of economical relevance.…”

“…Apart from the concerns raised, related to the impact of housing of pregnant sows in pig industry [5,6], it should be also noted that keeping breeding sows is a process of increased costs that is reflected in the final product. In this context, early and precise diagnosis of pregnancy in sows is crucial for the cost effective management of a pig farm [7], in an effort to avoid unnecessary treatment of erroneous characterized animals as pregnant.…”
