Comparative Study of the Effective Release Energy, Residual Gas Fraction, and Emission Characteristics with Various Valve Port Diameter-Bore Ratios (VPD/B) of a Four-Stroke Spark Ignition Engine

Abstract: In this research, the residual gas, peak firing pressure increase, and effective release energy were completely investigated. To obtain this target, the experimental system is installed with a dynamo system and a simulation model was setup. Through combined experimental and simulation methods, the drawbacks of the hardware optimization method were eliminated. The results of the research show that the valve port diameter-bore ratio (VPD/B) has a significant effect on the residual gas, peak firing pressure incre… Show more

“…Then, the model was used to investigate other characteristics of the engine in different modes for each type of diesel fuel and biodiesel blend. AVL-boost software is effective and useful software that is used to simulate most types of engine [15][16][17][18]; in this research, a common rail single cylinder engine is simulated based on the AVL-boost software. Table 1 presents the test engine's specifications; the simulation model is shown in Figure 1.…”

“…AVL-Boost is a powerful software package used for simulating all types of internal combustion engines, including SI engines [15], CI engines [16,17], 4 stroke engines [18], and engines using alternative fuel [19]. The simulation model of a small SI engine is shown in Figure 3.…”

“…The BSFC exhibited a contrary trend to that of the BMEP; the optimal BSFC was achieved at 202 g/kWh, with an iEGR rate of 22.8%. This makes it clear, at low load conditions, the high temperature of a suitable iEGR rate helps engines achieve superior homogeneous air-fuel mixtures and combustion processes [85]. However, a high eEGR rate can cause charge dilution, increasing the incomplete combustion rate and low burning conditions and decreasing thermal efficiency [86].…”
