“…Given the lack of haematological comparisons in seabirds in general it is hard to interpret this result. Increased haemoglobin in Passeriformes is associated with increased meta -bolism (Palomeque et al 1980); thus, whether alcids possess a higher metabolism than the procellariiform species used in the present study is unknown but deserves further study.…”

“…Furthermore, the iron was sequestered primarily within lysosome-like organelles of parenchymal liver cells during pre-moult and post-moult periods and there was active control of iron absorption as exemplified by a significant inverse correlation between hepatic iron content and absorption of 59 Fe oral dose. The mechanism which controlled the dramatic change of hepatic iron content of the pre-moult and post-moult periods is unknown, but may be associated with changes in erythropoiesis (Palomeque et al, 1980), increased metabolic requirement for iron during summer months or iron stores for migratory needs. No evidence of tissue damage was detectable even though the liver iron content approached concentrations thatxwould be associated with tissue dysfunction and damage in man with primary or secondary haemochromatosis (Iancu, 1983).…”
