Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Pyrolysis – Recycling Germany's Sorted Mixed Plastic Waste

Abstract: Pyrolysis is seen as promising to recycle sorted mixed plastic waste and reduce the global warming impact of the linear plastic economy. However, in Germany, the benefits of pyrolysis are questioned due to a lack of transparent data and regional life cycle assessments. Here, we provide a life cycle assessment of pyrolysis with caustic soda or lime compared to waste incineration with energy recovery. The life cycle assessment evaluates the treatment of 1 kg of Germany's sorted mixed plastic waste while providin… Show more

“…In all three scenarios, the environmental impact was found to be less than landfilling. Hermanns et al [54] found that global warming impacts can be reduced by about 60% to 94% compared with incineration through pyrolysis when considering a life-cycle assessment of mixed waste plastics. Moreover, Jeswani et al [55] also conducted life-cycle assessment of mixed plastic wastes and found that pyrolysis has about 50% lower climate change impact and life-cycle energy use than energy recovery from MPW.…”
