Comparative Evaluation of the Remineralizing Effects and Surface Microhardness of Glass Ionomer Cements Containing Bioactive Glass (S53P4): An in vitro Study

Abstract: Dental cements including the glass ionomer cement (GIC) have found widespread use in restoring tooth structures. In this study, modifications of glass ionomer cements (GICs) were made by adding bioactive glass (BAG) to GIC to obtain bioactive restorative materials. This study used polarized light microscopy (PLM) to examine the remineralization effects of the study materials on dentin. It also evaluated the Vickers microhardness of the experimental materials. Experimental glass ionomer cement (GIC)-BAG materia… Show more

“…Also in Lee’s survey, it was shown that the physical properties of RMGI improved with the incorporation of 10% nano-HA and micro-HA (10), and HA-added RMGI showed the highest bioactivity and bond strength to tooth structures (9,10). In another study, Khaghani explained that adding 5 wt% of HA increased the compressive strength of conventional glass-ionomer and also improved its diametral and tensile strengths (3).…”

“…According to the findings of the latest research, bioactive restorative materials have emerged in the operative dentistry as smart materials of great qualities [6,[22][23][24][25][26]. The advantages, which have already been described in this work plus the new features that an alkasite has, like the alkaline fillers that increase their concentration where there's an acid attack in the oral cavity, either in saliva, as well as the tooth structure [27].…”
