Comparative analysis of aneurysm volume by different methods based on angiography and computed tomography angiography

Abstract: Endovascular treatment and prognosis of intracranial aneurysms are based on size and volume, which demand more accurate neuroimaging techniques. Aneurysm volume calculation is important to choose endovascular treatment modalities and packing density calculation. Of all these methods, it remains unknown which one is the most accurate to calculate aneurysm volume. The objective of this study is to compare the accuracy of three angiography-based versus three tomographic-based methods which calculate aneurysm volu… Show more

“…18 Several software-based methods of volume measurement have been implemented on CTA images. 14 CE-MRA has advantages in the serial monitoring of untreated UIAs because there is no radiation (as in CTA) or arterial catheterizationrelated risks (as in conventional angiography). CE-MRA also is not subject to flow-related artifacts, specifically saturation effects that are pronounced in slowly rotating intra-aneurysmal blood, and the benefits provided by the increased reliability of this approach are considered, in a high-risk disease condition, to outweigh the known risks of gadolinium administration.…”

“…10 Volume has been proposed as a more sensitive and comprehensive parameter for evaluation of aneurysm size compared with diameter measured on a 2D plane. [11][12][13] While various methods have been developed for aneurysm volume calculation, 14 they lack validation and little is currently known about the growth trajectory of UIAs when assessed by volumetric metrics.…”

“…Nonetheless, it has been widely used in studies and applied to commercial software for calculating coil packing density. Other AVQ methods have been introduced and improved upon with 3-dimensional (3D) angiographic data, but these also have limitations related to imaging modality, angiography equipment (workstations), and the particular software utilized 2,5,6,8,9,23,26) . Therefore, the applicability of these methods to clinical use and research is J Korean Neurosurg Soc 64 (4) : 514-523 also somewhat limited.…”
