Comparative Analyses of Parameters Influencing Children Pedestrian Behavior in Conflict Zones of Urban Intersections

Abstract: Children pedestrians make up 30% of the total number of children injured in road traffic in the EU. Research shows that children are injured more often in the urban areas, in residential areas near schools and parks, often at intersections and pedestrian crossings. In this study, children’s traffic behavior was analyzed by observation of signalized pedestrian crosswalks. According to the same methodology, the research was conducted in three cities in two countries (Enna, Italy, Osijek and Rijeka, Croatia) with… Show more

“…However, before teaching children through road safety education programs on how to behave in traffic, it is essential to first understand their behaviour [64]. Similar recommendations have also been made by other researchers in the EU [5]. Moreover, younger children can be educated about traffic safety at home by their parents using digital games which have shown to improve the performance of participants related to traffic safety [68].…”

“…Children are highly involved in these statistics as they have a share of 38% in the total number of pedestrian fatalities [4]. Data from the European Union also shows that children are often involved in traffic accidents in urban and residential areas near schools [5].…”

“…Analyses of existing research regarding child-pedestrians in the area of signalized pedestrian crosswalks conducted by the authors in previous papers [12][13][14][15] detected the main group of parameters that affect children's traffic behavior. These are: sociodemographic parameters and children's ways of moving (e.g., age, gender, supervising, moving in a group), urban, infrastructural, and traffic parameters (e.g., crosswalk width and length, signal timing), and risky behavior involving distractors (e.g., use of mobile phone).…”

“…Several research studies have focused on both road geometry (especially on crossings near intersections in urban areas) [1][2][3] and on different types of users (by gender, age, work) and travel habits (i.e., motivation for travelling, travelling alone or in groups) [4][5][6].…”
