SummaryUntil recently, reports on MRSA in livestock were mainly limited to occasional detections in dairy cattle mastitis. Since 2005 however, studies show the existence of an MRSA clone, CC398, which has been reported colonizing pigs, veal calves and broiler chickens and infecting dairy cows. Many aspects of its prevalence in pigs are not yet understood. In other livestock, colonizing capacity and reservoir status are still unclear.. MRSA CC398 has also been detected in meat but, like for other MRSA, the risk this might pose is rather unclear. For now, the most worrying aspect of MRSA CC398 seems to be its capacity to spread to humans. This might complicate MRSA control measures in human healthcare, posing for urgent research into risk factors and transmission routes. Overall, infections with MRSA CC398 are much less reported than carriage. More investigation into its pathogenic potential is though required. Also the origin and evolution of this clone remain to be revealed.3

L'espèce Staphylococcus aureus a montré, au cours de ces dernières années, un fort pouvoir de colonisation naso-pharyngée, en particulier chez le porc. Le pourcentage de souches résistantes intrinsèques ou SAMR est variable mais le risque de colonisation est non négligeable pour les professionnels de la filière de production porcine, tels que les porchers, vétérinaires, employés d'abattoir. L'identification moléculaire par la technique de Multi Locus Sequence Typing (MLST) de souches initialement non typables (NT) par l'électrophorèse en champ pulsé indique la prédominance, aussi bien en Europe, en Amérique du Nord qu'en Asie, du type ST398 (ou CC398). Cette souche est encore peu résistante aux antibiotiques, à l'exception des tétracyclines, voire des macrolides et ne produit pas les facteurs de virulence rapportés habituellement chez le CA-MRSA, tels que la leucocidine de PantonValentine. Divers types d'infection sont maintenant rapportés chez l'homme dans plusieurs pays européens : infections cutanéo-muqueuses, pulmonaires, bactériémiques et endocardites. Des spécialistes évoquent, pour ces souches d'origine animale (LA pour Lifestock-Associated), l'éventualité « d'une nouvelle zoonose » malgré leur faible diffusion chez l'homme.Mots-clés : S. aureus, ST398, portage, narine, SARM, zoonose. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a growing concern in companion and food-producing animals. The presence of multidrug-resistance with a wide range of extracellular enterotoxin genes, virulence factors, and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (pvl) cytotoxin genes confer life-threatening traits on MRSA and makes them highly pathogenic and diicult to treat. Clonal complex 398 (CC398), a predominant clonal lineage of livestock-associated-MRSA in domestic animals and retail meat, is capable of infecting humans. In order to monitor and prevent MRSA contamination, it is critical to understand its source and transmission dynamics. In this review, we describe MRSA in food-producing animals (pig, catle, chicken), horses, pet animals (dogs, cats), and food products (pork, beef, chicken, milk, and ish).
