* CNPq FellowExperiments were carried out under laboratory, growth chamber, and field conditions to evaluate the effect of Plant growth-promoting and bioprotecting rhizobacteria (PGPBR) seed treatment on seed pathogens, seed germination, plant growth, and grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum). Most of the PGPBR strongly reduced the recovery of the pathogens from infected wheat seeds. All treatments, except the chemical iprodione + thiram, significantly promoted plant growth over the nontreated control. Psudomonas putida biotype A (11) and P. agglomerans (14) showed the greatest effects. Field experiments, carried out at two locations, indicated that all treatments, except P. chlororaphis (42), significantly increased seedling emergence of wheat . In Pato Branco, PR, P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (44) presented the best results, both being superior to fungal biological and chemical treatments. In Passo Fundo P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (17 and 44) significantly improved yield over the nontreated control. Yield increases of these three PGPBR were similar to the chemical treatment iprodione + thiram. In Pato Branco, P. putida biotype A (11) and P. putida biotype B (17), as well as the chemical treatment, provided significant increase over the nontreated control. Yield increases by the PGPBR varied from 18% to 22% in Passo Fundo and from 27% to 28% in Pato Branco.Key words: wheat, Triticum aestivum. RESUMOConduziu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de estudar o efeito do fungo Trichoderma harzianum como promotor de crescimento de sementes de milho tratadas com diferentes fungicidas. O experimento foi realizado em vasos em casa-devegetação, adotando o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial (3x2), utilizando os tratamentos com fungicidas: Captan®, Maxim® e testemunha e inoculação (com e sem inóculo) em quatro repetições. As características agronômicas avaliadas foram: altura de planta, peso da matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes e também a técnica de isolamento do fungo nas raízes aos 45 dias após semeadura. Observou-se diferença significativa somente para o fator inóculo na característica peso de matéria seca de raízes. Pelos resultados obtidos, verificou-se que o fungo Trichoderma harzianum estimulou maior acúmulo de matéria seca nas raízes das plantas de milho e também estava presente nas raízes das plantas oriundas de sementes inoculadas, independentemente do tratamento fungicida das sementes. ABSTRACTThe objective of this work was to study the effect of the fungus Trichoderma harzianum as a growth promoter on the corn seeds treated with different fungicides. This experiment was carried out in pots in a greenhouse by adopting the experimental completely randomized design in (3 X 2) factorial scheme, by utilizing the treatments with fungicides: Captan®, Maximim® and control and inoculation (with and without an inoculum) with four replicates. The agronomic characteristics evaluated were: plant height, shoot and root dry matter weight and also the inoculum isolation technique on the rots after sowing. Significant differences were found only for the factor inoculum in the characteristic root dry matter weight. The results obtained revealed that the fungus Trichoderma harzianum stimulated greatest dry matter accumulation in the roots of corn plants and also it was present in the roots of plants from inoculated seeds regardless of the treatment of the seeds with fungicides.

Fourteen strains of Trichoderma spp. were isolated from Algerian desert soils and assessed for their antagonistic activity against Fusarium crown and root rot of wheat. Biocontrol efficiency of Trichoderma spp. was studied by in vitro and in vivo based bioassay against three pathogenic species: F. culmorum, F. graminearum and F. verticillioides. In vitro based bioassay (dual culture) results obtained with all Trichoderma spp. isolates showed significant decrease in colony diameter of Fusarium species compared to the control. The highest percentages of reduction in colony diameter were obtained with T. harzianum Thr.4 causing a growth reduction of 70.68%, 67.05 and 70.57% against F. culmorum, F. graminearum and F. verticillioides, respectively. All Trichoderma spp. isolates were able to overgrow and sporulate above F. culmorum colonies but no overgrowth was observed with F. graminearum and F. verticilliodes. The seed treatment by Trichoderma spp. isolates before sowing in a soil already infested by the pathogens led to a significant decrease of disease severity compared to the untreated control. The highest disease index decrease (>70%) was obtained with two isolates of T. harzianum (Thr.4 and Thr.10) and T. viride Tv.6 against the three fungal pathogens. Lytic enzymes production by Trichoderma spp. isolates was tested in liquid cultures containing fungal cell walls of each pathogen as sole carbon source. Higher levels of protease and chitinase activities were induced by hyphal cell walls of F. graminearum than cell walls of F. verticillioides and F. culmorum. T. harzianum Thr.4 exhibited the highest enzyme activities with hyphal cell walls of F. graminearum and F. culmorum. However, in the medium amended with cell wall of F. verticillioides, maximal lytic activities were recorded for T. viride Tv.6.
