Combined adnexal tumor of the skin

Abstract: Two patients had distinctive adnexal skin tumors that showed cellular differentiation toward the formation of more than one adnexal structure. In one patient, the tumor showed differentiation toward pilar and sweat ductal structures. In the second patient, tumor differentiation toward the formation of sebaceous glands, pilar, and sweat ductal structures was found. We propose the term "combined adnexal tumor of the skin" for this neoplasm.

“…The current study cannot answer the intriguing questions of origin and differentiation of the microcystic adnexal carcinoma, which have been debated since the first description of this often misinterpreted neoplasm by Goldstein et al 30 in 1982. Dual follicular and eccrine differentiations 26,30–33 , single eccrine differentiation 34–36 and, most recently, follicular and apocrine 37,38 differentiations are discussed in the literature. Evidence of follicular differentiation is readily available in the superficial portion of the tumor in the form of keratinous cysts.…”

“…Some eells from the same eell line produee dome-shaped strueture; the cross seetion of these domes reveals lumen formation (L) within the dome (X15). degrees of differrentiation are ptesent in the same lesion (9)(10)(11)(12). In sotne tutnors, the epidermis eovering the lesion produees hair or ecerine gland germs (Figs.…”
