Colour Vision Impairment in Young Alcohol Consumers

Abstract: Alcohol consumption among young adults is widely accepted in modern society and may be the starting point for abusive use of alcohol at later stages of life. Chronic alcohol exposure can lead to visual function impairment. In the present study, we investigated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity, colour arrangement ability, and colour discrimination thresholds on young adults that weekly consume alcoholic beverages without clinical concerns. Twenty-four young adults were evaluated by an ophthalmologist … Show more

“…The alcohol works as a depressor of the CNS [7, 12], which may alter diffusely cognitive and perceptual processes [2, 6, 18]. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of moderate acute alcohol ingestion (0.08% BAC) on the eye movement pattern, as an indicator of cognitive processing [34].…”

“…The effects may be felt and measured even when alcohol is consumed in light to moderate levels [6]. According to Edward, Marschal and Cook, alcohol acts as CNS depressor, acting in various areas, among which are the reticular formation, the spinal cord, the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex [7].…”

“…31 In addition, age, certain disease states, and lifestyle choices can have an effect on the ability to see and distinguish colors. [32][33][34] In comparison, a 12-bit camera can accurately and independently distinguish 68 billion colors. Because of this superiority of the digital system to assess color hues, specific attention needs to be given to setting a correct threshold within the digital analysis to ensure that background staining, however faint, does not result in falsepositive identification.…”

“…Alcohol abuse, cocaine, migraines, dietary deficiencies, diabetes, glaucoma, brain damage from strokes or synesthesia, Parkinson's disease or ocular disorders can cause either short-term color vision deficiences or long-term color vision deficiencies [30][31][32][33][34]. The cones that are affected by various drugs and medical disorders vary.…”
