Composite resins were reinforced with glass and polyethylene fibers in this study, and the effect of fiber reinforcement on the color change of composite resins was investigated. After accelerated aging, the effect of fiber reinforcement on the color stability of composite resins was also examined. There were three experimental groups (n=12 disks per group): non-fiber-reinforced composite (non-FRC control), polyethylene fiber (Ribbond-THM)-reinforced composite, and glass fiber (everstick NET)-reinforced composite. According to the critical remarks of color change of National Bureau of Standarts (NSB), glass fiber-reinforced anterior composites showed trace color change and polyethylene-fiber reinforced composites showed slight color change before accelerated aging. After accelerated aging, both control and fiber-reinforced composite groups showed noticeable color change. It was concluded that both the types of fiber reinforcement and composite resin influenced the color change of fiber-reinforced composite resins.

Basic evaluation on physical properties of experimental fluorinated soft lining materials

The purpose of the present study was to compare the properties required for the clinical application of soft lining materials containing a fluorinated monomer versus that of conventional materials in an effort to develop a new soft lining material with long-term stable viscoelastic properties. Four soft lining materials were examined. Two experimental materials containing dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (SR12F) or tridecafluorooctyl methacrylate (SR13F) were prepared. Two commercial soft lining materials, one acrylicbased and one silicone rubber-based, were selected as reference materials. Shore A hardness, viscoelastic properties, water sorption, solubility, and staining resistance were evaluated. The Shore A hardness and the displacements were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's HSD test. The water sorption, the solubility and the color change were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. The significance level was set at 0.05. SR12F and SR13F showed greater viscous flow, low water sorption, low solubility, and good staining resistance compared to the commercial products. The results indicate that the soft lining materials containing fluorinated monomers might have a potentially long-term stable viscoelastic behavior.

Objective: To test the null hypothesis that accelerated aging has no effect on the surface microhardness and roughness of two light-cured lingual retainer adhesives. Materials and Methods: Ten samples of light-cured materials, Transbond Lingual Retainer (3M Unitek) and Light Cure Retainer (Reliance) were cured with a halogen light for 40 seconds. Vickers hardness and surface roughness were measured before and after accelerated aging of 300 hours in a weathering tester. Differences between mean values were analyzed for statistical significance using a t-test. The level of statistical significance was set at P Ͻ .05. Results:The mean Vickers hardness of Transbond Lingual Retainer was 62.8 Ϯ 3.5 and 79.6 Ϯ 4.9 before and after aging, respectively. The mean Vickers hardness of Light Cure Retainer was 40.3 Ϯ 2.6 and 58.3 Ϯ 4.3 before and after aging, respectively. Differences in both groups were statistically significant (P Ͻ .001). Following aging, mean surface roughness was changed from 0.039 m to 0.121 m and from 0.021 m to 0.031 m for Transbond Lingual Retainer and Light Cure Retainer, respectively. The roughening of Transbond Lingual Retainer with aging was statistically significant (P Ͻ .05), while the change in the surface roughness of Light Cure Retainer was not (P Ͼ .05). Conclusions: Accelerated aging significantly increased the surface microhardness of both lightcured retainer adhesives tested. It also significantly increased the surface roughness of the Transbond Lingual Retainer.
