Colloidal Synthesis of NixPt1−x Nanoparticles with Tuneable Composition and Size

Abstract: NixPt1−x is the missing link in the series of magnetic alloy particles. We report here on the first high‐quality synthesis of this nanomaterial. Although the chemistry of the Fe, Co, and Ni compounds is usually similar, distinctive differences are found in the nucleation, growth, and shape control of the respective nanoparticles, and first magnetic measurements are presented. The image shows star‐shaped agglomerates of nanoparticles.

“…1 for the NiPt-CNT system after 1 and 10 minutes of reaction. As reported for the particle synthesis in homogeneous solution the particle formation is fast and the reaction is usually finished within a few minutes after the injection of the platinum precursor [20,32,[38][39][40]. Accordingly, we find a large amount of small particles either freely in solution or covering the CNTs already after 1 minute of synthesis.…”

“…Recent reports include platinum [6,8,9] [19,20] and catalytic properties [21][22][23]. Beyond that, 1D alignment of NPs enables to modify the saturation magnetization and coercitivity through magnetostatic coupling [24][25][26].…”

“…The XRD pattern of the free-standing PtCo nanocrystals exhibits reflections characteristic of a facecentered cubic (fcc) lattice shifted to slightly higher angles (ϩ0.1°) than those expected for bulk Pt, which is consistent with a change in lattice constant due to alloy formation. 2,25 The peaks observed at 16 and 24°are artifacts of the XRF tape used in data acquisition. Selected area energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis performed on single free-standing particles gives an average of 15% (atomic) Co incorporation relative to Pt, while the change in lattice constant by XRD corresponds to about 5% Co incorporation.…”

“…One branch of material synthesis which fulfills these requirements is colloidal chemistry [33]. Today, the control over nucleation and growth phases of nanocrystals allows tayloring the crystal size, while the amount and nature of ligand molecules and precursors permits control over shape, surface properties, and atomic composition of the nanocrystals [34]. In some systems it is possible to synthesize such structures with almost atomic precision and in macroscopic amounts [35,36].…”
