Collaborative Concession in Food Movement Networks: The Uneven Relations of Resource Mobilization

Abstract: How do food movements prioritize and work to accomplish their varied and often conflicting social change goals at the city scale? We refer to this uneven process with the analytical concept of “collaborative concession”. The strategic resource mobilization of money, land, and labor operates through certain collabora… Show more

“…Moving beyond studies that show the richness and diversity of such initiatives at the local level [1,2], we highlight that AFOs hold heterogeneous and complementary conceptualizations of sustainability. Moreover, network analysis confirms previous findings [21,22]. AFOs tend to be disconnected from one another.…”

“…Conversely, supporters of strong sustainability believe that a change in model to reduce our consumption of resources and maintain a viable ecosystem for several generations is necessary [18][19][20]. So far, only a handful of studies have analyzed a broad range of AFOs to understand whether they work together and what characterizes their shared political projects [21,22]. Accordingly, we ask which conceptualization(s) of sustainability AFOs propose and to what extent these conceptualizations are shared across a broad range of AFOs.…”

“…With similarities in the form of established social networks and organizational methods, different schemes employ different ways of enhancing the producer-consumer relationships. Research has pointed out that the direct food supply schemes are confronted with several challenges including but not limited to money, land and labor that are seriously contested within food movements [20,25,26]. Since multiple actors are involved in different stages of food supply from production to consumption [2,20,21], one key challenge in localizing food systems today is to bring together various actors and encourage collaborative action.…”

“…While social network analyses are generally conducted on a quantitative basis, Luxton and Sbicca (2020) call for studies combining a quantitative and qualitative social network analysis, providing insights into both the 'structure' and the 'story' of networks The current study builds upon this methodological approach, as illustrated in figure 4.2. Following Sbicca, Hale, and Roeser (2019), stage 2 aims to map the 'structure' of the network and gives a static understanding of the urban food governance network. Stages 1 and 3 serve to explore the 'story' and provide a more dynamic understanding of the network.…”
