“…Metabolic alterations related to liver fibrogenesis are complex and include modifications in the levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (CAMP) that may regulate the amount of collagen degraded intracellularly in some systems (Rojkind and Kershenobich, 1983). Since our previous findings indicated that CCl, liver cirrhosis is characterized by increases in adenylate cyclase activity and CAMP levels (Mourelle et al, 1981), it could be suggested that amelioration of fibrosis by silymarin is mediated by the agent's plasma membrane effects (i.e., the adenylate cyclase system). Nevertheless, the improvement in fibrosis and in liver cell functions may be due to distinct processes that could occur through independent pharmacological activities of the drug or its metabolites.…”
