Cocktail effect of Profenophos and Abamectin on tadpoles of Asian Common Toad (<i>Duttaphrynus</i> <i>melanostictus</i>)

Abstract: Farmers mix two or more pesticides as mixing saves the spraying time and the labour cost and also with the idea that it increases the efficiency. The cocktail effect of two agrochemicals, profenophos and abamectin, was tested on the tadpoles of the Asian common toad, Duttaphrynus melanostictus under laboratory conditions. First, the 48 hr lethal concentrations (LC 50) was determined. Then, a chronic exposure to a series of ecologically relevant concentrations (profenophos: 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 ppm and ab… Show more

“…Mortality has direct implications on population declines, but a reduced growth rate may have indirect consequences. Commonly used agricultural insecticides such as chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, glyphosate, propanil, and profenofos have been tested on two local amphibian species: the common hourglass tree frog P. cruciger and the Asian common toad Bufo melanostictus and shown that all the chemicals significantly decreased survival, affected the growth and induced malformations under laboratory conditions (Jayawardena et al, 2010(Jayawardena et al, , 2011Ratnayake and Rajakaruna, 2018). Today, the use of all these chemicals except profenofos is banned in Sri Lanka.…”
