Co-remediation of Pb Contaminated Soils by Heat Modified Sawdust and Festuca arundinacea

Abstract: This research aimed to explore the potential and mechanism of heat modified sawdust combined with Festuca arundinacea for the remediation of pb-contaminated soil. We determined pb concentration and biochemical indices in plants and soils, analyzed microbial communities in soil, and studied Pb distribution in subcellular and tissues. Under co-remediation of 5% material addition and Festuca arundinacea, the concentration of pb in soil decreased. pb toxicity of Festuca arundinacea was alleviated by 2% material ad… Show more

“…Among them, Pb has the lowest mobility, which is mainly due to the relatively low mobility of Pb itself. In addition, compared with other heavy metals, Pb is an immobilized heavy metal, which can be easily combined with the carboxyl group in the cell wall, and the root acts as a physical barrier through the Casparian zone in the endoderm (Zhang et al, 2020). TF and BCFshoot decreased signi cantly compared with 1#, 2#, and 3# groups.…”

“…The accumulation and long persistence of pollutants such as heavy metals (HM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) is nowadays a hot topic as the presence of these substances in the soil negatively reflects on the whole trophic chain and can even compromise human health (Zhang et al, 2020). Several strategies are proposed to remove these pollutants from the soil (physical, chemical, biological).…”

“…Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is a popular forage grass which can tolerate and adjust osmotic level for desiccation tolerance as well as avoidance. It also develops an efficient root system in soil to use maximum soil moisture effectively [20]. Plants develop phenological adaptations for stress tolerance, e.g., when enough rainwater or water is available, to complete their life cycle over short durations (weeks to months) [21].…”
