Clinicopathologic features of encapsulated hepatocellular carcinoma.A study of 26 cases

Abstract: The clinicopathologic features of 26 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surrounded by a grossly distinct capsule‐like fibrous tissue were studied. The frequency of this type was 10.3% among autopsy cases of HCC. The mean age of the patients was 64.1 years, which was significantly older compared with that of 143 cases of nonencapsulated HCC. Hepatitis‐B surface antigen in serum was positive in 18.7% of the cases studied, the positivity rate being lower than that of HCC in general. Histologically, the tumor… Show more

“…If alcohol can induce HCC more directly or if tumour development always requires existent cirrhosis is not known. HCC, however, has also been reported in alcoholics without cirrhosis (Anthony, 1976 (Okuda, 1977). Of the 15 cases with CC, 6 were alcoholics with a crude ratio of 3.3, which was not significant, (X2 = 2.…”

“…The most predominant histological type of PLC is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (CC) is less common than HCC and is thought to have a different aetiology (Okuda et al, 1977). HCC has been associated with hepatitis B virus, aflatoxins and alcohol with -75% of cases occurring in patients with cirrhosis (Popper, 1979).…”

“…Neither PAI nor PEI group patients showed a significant change at the time of discharge from the pretreatment value in the serum levels of GOT (IU/dL: 88 Ϯ 41 vs. compared with ethanol. 25,26 The presence of a fibrous capsule and fibrous septa within the mass is one of the gross characteristics of HCC in the Far East, 36 and a most helpful diagnostic clue in imaging. 37,38 Encapsulated HCC also occurs among non-Asian patients.…”

“…The prognosis of HCC is still very poor, because it develops multicentrically and is associated in most cases with chronic liver diseases. [1][2][3] Furthermore, invasion of HCC to the peritoneum causes malignant ascites, which is experienced frequently in patients with advanced HCC. The patient's quality of life with this condition is seriously decreased as a result of the abdominal distension and pressure on the chest cavity.…”
