Clinical Outcomes of Endoscopic and Open Resection of Recurrent Sinonasal Inverted Papilloma

Abstract: Endoscopic and open approaches are both available to achieve radical excision of the recurrent sinonasal inverted papilloma, with similar rates of recurrence. The risk for recurrence is likely related to the Krouse stage of the tumor, with more aggressive tumors having a higher propensity for recurrence. Endoscopic surgery is an effective treatment of recurrent sinonasal inverted papilloma.

“…Two features of sinonasal IP are especially noteworthy: (1) it has a high propensity toward recurrence, with a recurrence rate of 5–30%; and (2) it is associated with squamous cell carcinoma in 5–21% of patients [2]. Therefore, aggressive surgical excision is the recommended treatment option.…”

“…In this head and neck neoplasm, surface epithelial cells grow downward into the underlying supportive tissue, where they generate clinical problems. The bone destruction and local invasiveness, higher recurrence rate, and malignant transformation into squamous cell carcinoma make it difficult to treat (Gu and Zhang, 2014;Wood and Casiano, 2012). Instead of intense studies investigating this tumorigenesis process, clinical features and morphological parameters of inverted papilloma, the nature and pathogenesis of this type of human neoplasm are still poorly unknown.…”
