Clinical importance of the middle meningeal artery: A review of the literature

Abstract: The middle meningeal artery (MMA) is a very important artery in neurosurgery. Many diseases, including dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF), pseudoaneurysm, true aneurysm, traumatic arteriovenous fistula (AVF), moyamoya disease (MMD), recurrent chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), migraine and meningioma, can involve the MMA. In these diseases, the lesions occur in either the MMA itself and treatment is necessary, or the MMA is used as the pathway to treat the lesions; therefore, the MMA is very important to the de… Show more

“…In the present study, the diameter and trunk length of the STA were not different between the MMD and the non-MMD groups, indicating that MMD did not influence the diameter and trunk length of the STA; this result is in contrast to what occurs in the compensatory dilated tortuous middle meningeal artery in patients with MMD (8). The present results also indicated that, compared with the diameters above and below the zygomatic arch, the diameter of the STA at the midpoint of the zygomatic arch was the smallest.…”

“…14,15 This sphenoidal artery variant complicates surgical planning for cases in which an MMA deriving its circulation from the OphA is supplying pathologic processes such as meningiomas, dural arteriovenous fistulas, moyamoya disease, aneurysms, and chronic subdural hematomas. 17,46…”

“…In previous cases, treatment had included craniotomy with ligation, resection, and endovascular techniques [ 1 ]. Positive results have been reported following both embolization and surgical resection of MMA pseudoaneurysm [ 3 ]. In our case reported here, an endovascular technique was used because the treatment team determined the patient to be a poor operative candidate.…”
