In recent years, 3D printing (3DP) has gained importance in various fields. This technology has numerous applications, particularly in medicine. This contribution provides an overview on the state of the art of 3DP in medicine and showcases its current use in different medical disciplines and for medical education. In this meta-review, we provide a detailed listing of systematic reviews on this topic as this technology has become increasingly applied in modern medicine. We identified 134 relevant systematic reviews on medical 3DP in the medical search engine PubMed until 2023. 3DP has applications in various medical specialties, but is mainly used in orthopedics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, cardiology and neurosurgery. In surgical contexts, the adoption of 3DP contributes to a reduction in operation time, reduced blood loss, minimized fluoroscopy time and an overall improved surgical outcome. Nevertheless, the primary use of 3DP is observed in non-invasive applications, particularly in the creation of patient-specific models (PSM). These PSMs enhance the visualization of patients’ anatomy and pathology, thereby facilitating surgical planning and execution, medical education and patient counseling. The current significance of 3DP in medicine offers a compelling perspective on the potential for more individualized and personalized medical treatments in the future.

Complex deformities of lower limbs are frequent in children with genetic or metabolic skeletal disorders. Early correction is frequently required, but it is technically difficult and burdened by complications and recurrence. Herein, we described the case of a 7-year-old girl affected by severe bilateral genu varum due to spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. The patient was treated by patient-specific osteotomies and customized structural wedge allograft using Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) and 3D-printed patient-specific instrumentation (PSI). The entire process was performed through an in-hospital 3D-printing Point-of-Care (POC). VSP and 3D-printing applied to pediatric orthopedic surgery may allow personalization of corrective osteotomies and customization of structural allografts by using low-cost in-hospital POC. However, optimal and definitive alignment is rarely achieved in such severe deformities in growing skeleton through a single operation.

Introduction Preoperative planning is a critical step in the success of any complex surgery. The pur-pose of this study is to evaluate the advantage of VR glasses in surgical planning of complex tibial plateau fractures compared to CT planning. Materials and methods Five orthopedic surgeons performed preoperative planning for 30 fractures using either conventional CT slices or VR visualization with a VR headset. Planning was performed in a randomized order with a 3-month interval between planning sessions. A standardized questionnaire assessed planned operative time, planning time, fracture classification and understanding, and surgeons’ subjective confidence in surgical planning. Results The mean planned operative time of 156 (SD 47) minutes was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the VR group than in the CT group (172 min; SD 44). The mean planning time in the VR group was 3.48 min (SD 2.4), 17% longer than in the CT group (2.98 min, SD 1.9; p = 0.027). Relevant parameters influencing planning time were surgeon experience (-0.61 min) and estimated complexity of fracture treatment (+ 0.65 min). Conclusion The use of virtual reality for surgical planning of complex tibial plateau fractures resulted in significantly shorter planned operative time, while planning time was longer compared to CT planning. After VR planning, more surgeons felt (very) well prepared for surgery.
