Epidemiological studies have shown a rise in the prevalence of allergic diseases in India during the last two decades. However, recent evidence from the Global Asthma Network study has observed a decrease in allergic rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis in children. Still, with a population over 1.3 billion, there is a huge burden of allergic rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis, and this is compounded by an unmet demand for trained allergy specialists and poor health service framework. There is wide variation in the prevalence of allergic diseases between different geographical locations in India, and the reasons are unclear at present. This may at least in part be attributable to considerable heterogeneity in aero-biology, weather, air pollution levels, cultural and religious factors, diet, socioeconomic strata and literacy. At present, factors enhancing risks and those protecting from development of atopy and allergic diseases have not been well delineated, although there is some evidence for the influence of genetic factors alongside cultural and environmental variables such as diet, exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution and residence in urban areas. This narrative review provides an overview of data from India regarding epidemiology, risk factors and genetics and highlights gaps in evidence as well as areas for future research.

A asma constitui-se como uma enfermidade crônica, causada pelo contato com um alérgeno indutor de uma resposta inflamatória, que acomete parte do trato respiratório, em um indivíduo predisposto geneticamente. Apesar de seus conceitos serem bem conhecidos pela maioria da comunidade científica atual, a divulgação de novos estudos ocorre de maneira constante, o que contribui para a atualização da temática, ao passo em que ocorre o acréscimo de novas informações. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi revisar na literatura acerca das principais características da asma, destacando seus aspectos fisiopatológicos. Para isso, foi realizada uma revisão integrativa com uso de dados secundários, obtidos por meio das bases bibliográficas digitais PubMed, STM (Science Translational Medicine) e SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), durante o período de setembro a outubro de 2022. Para a exposição dos resultados obtidos, foi construído o Quadro 1, que expõe, de forma resumida, os principais trabalhos usados para este estudo. Da mesma forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi melhor aprofundado no tópico de “Discussão”, organizado com base nas fontes selecionadas. Dessa forma, as informações apresentadas por esta revisão podem ser levadas em consideração por futuros pesquisadores que desejem se atualizar acerca da temática da asma, com enfoque em seus aspectos fisiopatológicos.
