Clinical “case series”: a concept analysis

Abstract: Objectives: To analyze the concept of "case series" in the medical literature compared with case reports. Methods: A PubMed search for articles published during 2009 which had "case series" in their title was performed. A total number of 621 articles were retrieved. 586 papers were included in the analysis and 35 were excluded (18 were commentary letters, 5 were not in English, and twelve could not be retrieved by our Library). “…6 A case series has more than four patients while four patients or less should be reported. 7 We studied six cases of women in the reproductive age group with MRKH syndrome. Three surgical methods compared in this study include modification of McIndoe's vaginoplasty using Amnion graft which was used for three cases, two cases using split thickness skin graft and one using laparoscopic peritoneal pull technique (Modified Davydov's technique).…”

“…The concepts of "case series" and "case reports" are, however, not well defined in the literature. Therefore, the definitions proposed by Abu-Zidan, Abbas & Hefny (13), in which it is suggested that case series should have more than four participants, will be used throughout this paper. Critical appraisal is the process of systematically examining research evidence to judge its trustworthiness, its value and relevance in a particular context (14).…”

“…Sentinel event analysis is used to understand the root cause of such events. The number of cases does not have to be large to provide potentially practice changing insights; most case series use 10 or fewer cases . Our hypothesis is that men present with metastatic PCa due, in part, to modifiable health care system‐factors rather than disease factors such as aggressive disease.…”
