Clinical and Radiological Long-term Outcomes After Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Transplantation

Abstract: The significantly improved results on 3 outcome measures after 10 years suggest that MACT represents a suitable option in the treatment of local cartilage defects in the knee.

“…The average postoperative follow-up time was 11.4 years (range, 9.2-18 years). Seven studies had a minimum followup greater than 9 years [14][15][16][17]29,34,35 , while 2 studies included patients with minimum follow-ups of 6 and 7 years. 33,43 The mean defect size was 5.9 ± 1.6 cm 2 (range, 0.6-15.8 cm 2 ).…”

“…The first long-term data, 10 years after MACT for treatment of chondral defects, show significantly improved clinical and radiological outcome measures in patients with symptomatic traumatic cartilage lesions. 73 The use of scaffolds in a threedimensional culture system helps to optimize chondrocyte transplantation from not only a biological but also from a surgical point of view. However, delamination or disturbed fusion to the surrounding native cartilage and subchondral bone are still problems for the third-generation ACI.…”

“…In limited cartilage defects autologous chondrocyte implantation has been clinically applied for several years already. In contrast, the translation of anatomically shaped constructs for functional joint repair is still difficult to achieve11121314. Recent pioneering work has demonstrated the successful construction of customized anatomically shaped cartilage using human adipose-derived stem cells for total joint resurfacing15.…”
