Canola, Brassica napus Linnaeus var. oleifera, is one of the main oilseeds grown in the world. Pollination is required to ensure an acceptable yield. Among the main bee pollinators (Hymenoptera: Apidae) occurring in canola in southern Brazil are Apis mellifera (Linnaeus) (Apidae: Apini) and Trigona spinipes (Fabricius) (Apidae: Meliponini). Plant genotype, sowing season, meteorological factors, and abundance of competitors can influence the foraging rate of A. mellifera and T. spinipes in canola, which will impact yield. We evaluated the effect of plant genotype, sowing season, and meteorological factors on the abundance of foraging bees, as well as their coabundance and impacts on canola yield. Under the conditions of the study, we did not observe significant variation between genotypes and sowing season on bee abundance and canola yield. We note that the impact of temperature and relative humidity are important predictors of abundance of A. mellifera and T. spinipes. The temperature and relative humidity effects, however, differed according to bee species. Coabundance patterns indicated no evidence of competitive exclusion. Higher canola yields were obtained when both bee species had high population abundance.

“…The experiment was carried out in an experimental orchard managed with a conventional system, located in the Horticulture and Forestry Sector of the agricultural experimental station of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (EEA/UFRGS), in the municipality of Eldorado do Sul (30°05'32"S, 51°40'20"W, at 55 m altitude), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. According to the Köppen-Geiger's classification, the climate of the region is of the Cfa type, with annual mean temperature of the coldest month below 18°C and temperature of the warmest month greater than 22°C, and monthly, well distributed rainfall, between 100 and 170 mm (Alvares et al, 2013;Valério et al, 2018). The objective of this work was to evaluate the number of successive applications of gibberellic acid (GA3), during the autumn-winter period, for its effect on the reduction of flowering, in the subsequent spring after periods of low fruit load (off-year), in 'Montenegrina' mandarin trees (Citrus deliciosa). Sequential applications at 40 mg L-1 GA3 were tested from one to four times, at 21-day intervals, beginning in the end of May. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design, with four treatments and a control, four replicates, and one plant per experimental unit. Flowering, sprouting, types of shoots, fruit set, and fruit diameter were evaluated. The fruit set increases exponentially with the reduction of flowering intensity. The use of GA3 in two, three, or four sequential applications, from May to June, May to July, and from May to August, at 21-day intervals, reduces the intensity of flowering and sprouting of alternate bearing plants in the subsequent spring, increasing mixed shoots and reducing floral shoots. The use of four sequential applications of 40 mg L-1 GA3 promotes a great increase in the frequency of single flower terminal leafy shoots and favors the increase of fruit fixation and size.

Classificação climática para o estado do Amazonas segundo as zonas de vida de Holdridge Climate classification for the Amazonas State according to the Holdridge life zones RESUMO: As zonas de vida de Holdridge são baseadas nas relações entre precipitação, temperatura, pisos altitudinais e latitude, sendo úteis em aplicações ecológicas, particularmente em áreas tropicais. Objetivou-se com o presente estudo realizar a classificação do clima dos municípios do estado do Amazonas de acordo com as zonas de vida de Holdridge e compará-lo com a classificação de Köppen e de cobertura de vegetação original do estado. As comparações foram realizadas por meio de matrizes de confusão elaboradas com ferramentas de análise espacial. Os resultados indicaram biotemperaturas variando de 22,9 °C a 26,5 °C, se distribuindo de maneira crescente no sentido oeste para leste do estado. Foram encontradas cinco zonas de vida de Holdridge, sendo floresta úmida tropical basal e floresta úmida/floresta muito úmida tropical basal as mais relevantes, ocupando cerca de 85% da área do estado. Três zonas de vida corresponderam em 100% com a classificação climática Af conforme Köppen, sendo que as demais zonas de vida atingiram correspondências superiores a 75% com o mesmo tipo climático. Verificou-se que todas as zonas de vida se enquadraram nas vegetações ombrófila aberta, ombrófila densa e campinarana. Dessa maneira, o sistema de zonas de vida de Holdridge demonstrou-se uma ferramenta importante para a classificação do clima no estado, tendo correspondência com os mapas de vegetação e a classificação climática de Köppen.
