Citalopram versus other anti-depressive agents for depression

Abstract: Background Recent US and UK clinical practice guidelines recommend that second-generation antidepressants should be considered amongst the best first-line options when drug therapy is indicated for a depressive episode. Systematic reviews have already highlighted some differences in efficacy between second-generation antidepressants. Citalopram, one of the first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) introduced in the market, is one of these antidepressant drugs that clinicians use for routine depressi… Show more

“…The superiority of escitalopram over other SSRIs has been demonstrated in head to head efficacy trials and meta-analyses [18][19][20]22,23,[32][33][34]. Escitalopram is the most specific SSRI, because of its unique pharmacological property: selected serotonin reuptake inhibition [11].…”

“…All other RCTs found no significant differences in safety or efficacy between SSRIs: escitalopram and fluoxetine [25,26]; citalopram and sertraline [27]; fluoxetine and sertraline [28]; fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine [29] and fluvoxamine, sertraline and paroxetine [30]. Metaanalyses [31,[32][33][34][35][36] have also been published, two of them did not find any differences between SSRIs, while the others concluded with the superiority of escitalopram.…”

“…Mesembrenone and mesembranol were found to be much weaker in the 5-HT transport site in vitro [44]. The efficacy of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) in the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders is well documented [45]. More recently escitalopram, the putative SSRI, has been shown to improve cognition and facilitate post-stroke recovery [46].…”

“…Although psychological interventions are effective in the treatment of MDD, the prescription of antidepressant drugs is the mainstay of treatment to prevent relapse and recurrence (12), however, this may present some limitations, such as poor adherence and side effects (13).…”
