CiRS-7 promotes growth and metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma via regulation of miR-7/HOXB13

Abstract: The circular RNA ciRS-7 has been reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of various tumors, including gastric and colorectal cancer. However, the role of ciRS-7 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unsolved. In this study, we found that the ciRS-7 expression was significantly upregulated in ESCC cancer tissues compared with matched normal tissues and associated with poor patient survival. Overexpression of ciRS-7 abrogated the tumor-suppressive roles of miR-7 including cell proliferation, m… Show more

“…For instance, circ‐Sry contains 16 binding sites of miR‐138 and interacts with miR‐138 . The CDR1as/ciRS‐7 harbours more than 70 binding sites of miR‐7 and could sequester miR‐7 to reduce its tumour‐suppressive roles in colorectal cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma . CircHIPK3 was proved to be a tumour‐related molecule in bladder cancer by sequestering miR‐558 .…”

“…In addition, circRNAs have been proposed to play important roles in miRNA function and transcription regulation by acting as eTMs [26,39]. In human, ciRS-7 was reported to be a negative regulator of miR-7 [40]. Many circRNAs that contained miRNA binding sites were also found to be potential eTMs in Arabidopsis, rice and tomato [27,39].…”

“…4 circRNAs, a group of important endogenous non-coding RNAs, mainly consist of transcripts from exons and exert important roles in the downstream gene regulation. 11,12 miRNAs are another group ofnon-coding RNAs containing approximately 22 nucleotides, with a role of regulating gene expression. Thus, compared to their linear counterparts, circRNAs are extraordinarily stable in vivo due to their resistance to exonuclease.…”
