Circulating Sclerostin and Irisin Are Related and Interact with Gender to Influence Adiposity in Adults with Prediabetes

Abstract: Objectives. Sclerostin, an osteocyte-specific protein, has been found to be related to adiposity and glucose metabolism. Irisin, a myokine, can affect browning of white fat and influence glucose and energy homeostasis. Taken together, this suggests a probable network among fat, bone, and muscle that may influence health outcomes. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship of circulating sclerostin and irisin and their association with adiposity (assessed by body mass index (BMI)). Materials/Me… Show more

“…Moreover, Irisin concentration measured in post-menopausal women was negatively correlated with vertebral fragility fractures [26,27]. Interestingly, Irisin levels were negatively correlated with sclerostin serum levels, independent of age or gender [28]. These latter data support the finding obtained in mice in which sclerostin expression was downregulated by r-Irisin treatment [11••].…”

“…Load-induced decreases in Sost expression have been associated with increased bone formation (43). Furthermore, and interestingly, serum irisin levels in people are inversely correlated with serum sclerostin levels independently of age or sex (44). There is also an inverse correlation between serum irisin levels and vertebral fragility fractures in postmenopausal women (45,46).…”

“…With regard to the skeleton, Irisin levels were found inversely correlated with serum sclerostin levels in adults, independent of age or gender. 43 Likewise, post-menopausal women showed inverse correlation between Irisin levels and vertebral fragility fractures. 44,45 Conversely, Irisin measured in athletes was positively associated with bone density and strength, 46 supporting the idea that Irisin could have a protective role on bone health.…”
