Circulating metabolites of strawberry mediate reductions in vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in db/db mice

Abstract: Dietary supplementation of strawberry attenuates indices of vascular inflammation and dysfunction in diabetic db/db mice. The effect of strawberry on vasculature is endothelial-dependent and possibly mediated through their circulating metabolites. Strawberry might complement conventional therapies to improve vascular complications in diabetics.

“…Blueberries are high in anthocyanins, in addition to other polyphenolic compounds [ 3 ], and have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ] which contribute to improved vascular function and increased insulin sensitivity [ 53 , 54 ]. Anthocyanins are not digested or metabolized in the stomach or upper intestine and remain intact until reaching the large intestine, where they are converted to phenolic acids by commensal bacteria [ 12 , 55 ].…”

“…CCL2, a chemokine that recruits monocytes and macrophages, is highly expressed in epididymal adipose tissue of db/db mice [ 186 ], whereas the expression of nucleotide-binding-oligomerization domain type-1 (NOD1) is suppressed [ 186 ]. Inflammation also affects the vasculature and inflammatory markers such as monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, (VCAM1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1) or E-selectin are increased in aortic and carotid vessels from db/db mice [ 190 ]. Likewise, oxidative stress markers, as like 3NT-positive protein, are increased in serum [ 191 ].…”

“…Similar to blueberries, strawberries have been implicated in reducing inflammation in vascular endothelial cells. db / db mice, a mouse model of genetic obesity and type 2 diabetes, were used to assess the impact of strawberry consumption on endothelial cell inflammation [ 93 ]. Addition of freeze-dried strawberry powder (2.35% of the diet by weight) reduced monocyte binding and inflammation in aortic vessels in db / db mice.…”
