Circulating hyaluronate in psoriasis

Abstract: A radioassay method allowing measurements of low concentrations of circulating hyaluronate was used in a study of serum hyaluronate concentrations in 44 patients with psoriasis. Twenty-three of them had only skin lesions and 21 had both skin lesions and arthropathy. In both of these groups significantly elevated serum levels of hyaluronate were found. The highest values were observed in those with widespread and active skin disease and/or active arthritis. Serum hyaluronate positively correlated with the plasm… Show more

“…Also in patients with systemic sclerosis, which is a disease characterized by increased deposition of collagen and ground substance in the skin and internal organs, serum HYA levels are significantly elevated compared with controls [16,17]. In both psoriatic arthritis and reactive arthritis, the magnitude of the serum HYA levels depends on the degree of involvement of the peripheral joints [18]. In ankylosing spondylitis with an axial involvement and few peripheral joints affected, serum HYA levels remain normal.…”

“…Patients with psoriasis have elevated levels of HYA in serum and in suction blisters raised on the lesions [13,20,21]. With the aid of HABP, the HYA has been localized especially to the dermal papillae and around appendages [2,22].…”

“…In macrophages and dendritic cells, intermediate-molecular weight hyaluronan can induce nitric oxide synthase (39). Furthermore, hyaluronan can induce dendritic cell apoptosis (19,20,35,38). Oligomeric hyaluronan (8 -16 disaccharides) induces angiogenesis in a chick cornea assay (58).…”

“…This includes rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, scleroderma, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease (2,19,20,38,61). Various proinflammatory cytokines have been shown to influence hyaluronan expression in cells originating from connective tissue (29,34,53).…”
