Cigarette Butts and Their Application in Corrosion Inhibition for N80 Steel at 90 °C in a Hydrochloric Acid Solution

Abstract: Cigarette butts, one of the most ubiquitous forms of garbage in the world, need to be recycled because their toxicity can kill saltwater and freshwater fish. In this study, the cigarette butts are applied as corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel at 90 °C in hydrochloric acid. Weight loss and electrochemical techniques are used to evaluate the corrosion inhibitive effect of cigarette butt water extracts. Results show that the inhibition efficiencies arrive at 94.6% and 91.7% in 10% and 15% (wt %) HCl solution, res… Show more

“…The EIS spectra describes the behavior of the WECB with respect to its concentrations in the corrosive medium [ Figure 1(a), see Figures A1(a) and A2(a)], and it is seen that there exists a single capacitive semicircle at the higher frequency range (HFR) corresponding to one time constant for the corrosion process, which is similar to the reported results (Zhao et al, 2010a(Zhao et al, , 2010b. Furthermore, the phase angle at the Nyquist plot [ Figure 1(b), see Figures A1(b) and A2(b)] of the impedance diagrams clearly indicate the existence of one-time constant with yielding a straight line (Figure 1(a)) in the zoom at high frequency zone.…”

This can be explained by considering its chemical structure as in Fig Generally, two modes of adsorption could be considered.…”
