Show more

“…(2000) also observed that species of Loricariichthys rank among the most abundant species in the lentic habitats of southeastern Brazil, suggesting that their reproductive strategy is effective due to the ability to replace broods rapidly under a regime of environmental changes associated with an unpredictable hydrology in a reservoir constructed for hydroelectric purpose. Fecundity, reproductive cycle and gonad morphology of Loricariichtys spixii (Steindachner, 1862) were reported for Lajes reservoir (Araújo et al., 1998; Duarte and Araújo, 2000; Duarte et al., 2007), but information is still lacking on the reproductive strategy of this species.…”

“…In the first stanza, prior to the onset of reproduction, the females invest energy to weight increase (positive allometry: b = 3.22), wears once the reproductive engagement is achieved, this pattern is modified by the loss of body mass through spawning (negative allometry: b = 2.95). A similar pattern was recorded in Parauchenipterus striatus by Araújo et al (2000), in which females were heavier than males up to the 15 cm, but with an inverted trend above this body length. For Parauchenipterus galeatus, in contrast, Andrian & Barbieri (1992) recorded just the opposite, suggesting no standard pattern for Auchenipteridae and the need of additional investigation.…”

“…Trachelyopterus striatulus and Trachelyopterus galeatus, for example, display different size patterns between males and females (Andrian et al, 1992;Araújo et al, 2000). Several ecological factors (e.g., diet, habitat shifts) besides achieving sexual maturity may underpin allometric trends during growth and must be further investigated.…”
