“…A recent report by Holubar, Honigsman & Woolf (1973) of IgA in addition to IgG in a continuous pattern in two of five patients with cicatricial pemphigoid (CP) is of interest. A study by Bean & Michel (1973) of CP, however, showed only IgG to be present in five of their six patients, and this was in involved skin and mucous membrane, and it was present in only one of the six patients' uninvolved skin.…”

“…A study by Bean & Michel (1973) of CP, however, showed only IgG to be present in five of their six patients, and this was in involved skin and mucous membrane, and it was present in only one of the six patients' uninvolved skin. In the study of Holubar et al (1973) the biopsies were from involved or previously involved skin. It is reasonable that in diseases affecting the mucous membrane, as in CP, IgA should be present as part of the pathology, for IgA is the main immunoglobulin involved in the immune response of mucosal surfaces, including the buccal cavity and the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…Direct immunofluorescence studies show IgG and C3 in the basement membrane zone (Bean, 1975). Indirect immunofluorescence is usually negative, although a few reports have described a circulating antibody (Bean et al, 1972;Bean & Michael, 1973;Holubar, Honigsmann & Wolff, 1973;Griflith et al, 1974;Tagami & Imamura, 1974).…”

“…However, in contrast to BP, IgA has been found nearly as frequently as IgG [10,13,22] and also IgM has been demonstrated in a relatively high number of the cases [22], The uninvolved skin was only positive in a low number of cases [2,24]. The incidence of circulating IgG and IgA anti-BM antibodies is low in CP, but their occurrence had been reported [5,6,26],…”
