Chronic perfluorooctanesulfonic acid exposure disrupts lipid metabolism in zebrafish

Abstract: Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), a ubiquitous contaminant, has been used in various industrial applications. Currently few studies have documented the effects of chronic PFOS exposure on lipid metabolism, especially in aquatic organisms. The present study defined the effects of chronic exposure to low level of PFOS on lipid metabolism in F0 adult zebrafish and F1 offspring. Our findings revealed a severe fatty degeneration in the liver of F0 males treated with 0.5 μM PFOS and significant ultrastru… Show more

“…However, we did not conduct any related phenotypic analyses. Thus, we were only able to obtain the annotation details of these genes (i.e., dusp22 , ghsra , fgf19 , esm1 , and gpc4 ), which are important for controlling cell division and regulating growth 31 34 . Furthermore, bmp10 encodes a potent inhibitor of endothelial cell migration and growth 35 .…”

“…In addition, ICV injections of a MSH (MC4R) receptor agonist (melanotan II) suppress hypothalamic NPY expression (Kojima et al, 2010), and hypothalamic α-MSH-containing neurons are in close contact to NPY-containing nerve fibers, suggesting that the anorexigenic actions of the melanocortin system are mediated in part by an inhibition of the NPY system. In zebrafish larvae, although early ISH studies could not detect fasting-induced changes in hypothalamic POMC transcript levels (Song et al, 2003), more recent qPCR studies indicate that POMCa expression decreases in starved fish (Shanshan et al, 2016).…”

“…Numerous studies have documented homologies between zebrafish and human lipid metabolism [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. In fact, the zebrafish has recently become an important model organism for studying NAFLD [ 28 ].…”
